Always Picked Last Conquering the Bullies A Guide to Finding Your Way in Life Mr Kevin John Kearns Mrs Kathleen Brimingham 9780989588614 Books Reviews

  • Kevin’s positive and frank way of communication is refreshing. Always Picked Last can be helpful to kids as well as adults. This story, and Kevin's lessons about bullying should be in every school and home.

What struck me hardest was when one of Kevin’s teachers told him . . . “They’er just being boys.” It reminds me of a popular television show that is currently on TV, a family opening up a chain of restaurants. There is a lot of bulling going on and people just write it off as “That’s just the way they are”. A man bullying his brother; why do some people think this is “Just being boys”?

Those who bully use power to HURT people, attempting to make themselves feel better. Power does not always mean bigger or stronger, power can also mean popular or smart among other things. There is something wrong with these relationships.

Sure there are bullies in the world, and there always will be. People will tell you “That’s just the way life is”. For the victim it does not need too stay “Just the way life is.” Kevin came to realize why he had not discovered this earlier, “But I didn’t see it because I wasn’t looking outside of myself”.

Kevin confronts the issues straight on, in a manner that will help the young and the old. You see, bullying is not just for the young. People at all stages of life and people of all ages have been the victims of bullies. I told a friend of mine, who is in his sixties, that I had just read this book on Bullying by Kevin Kearns; his eyes watered up, he lowered his head and said “I was bullied when I was a kid, it effects me to this day.”

One of the people in Kevin’s book that affected me was Kevin’s uncle Henry, he took action to help another person ‘Look outside himself’. You will not notice much about Uncle Henry, but he played a pivotal role in Kevin’s life. We need more Uncle Henrys, how about you?

Kevin, thank you for opening up . . . You have made a difference in many lives.

    a victim of bullying.
  • While this book is a MUST read for parents, teachers, coaches, youth leaders etc... It is also MUST read for ALL kids! Why? It's not just the child who may be or is being bullied that would benefit from this book but also the child that may be tempted to bully someone or turn the other way when they see it happening. Rather than "preach" or "talk at you" about why bullying is detrimental, Kevin skillfully draws you into his experience being bullied. Quickly you FEEL what he feels and his experience becomes yours... and it hurts - not in a stabbing shocking pain way but in a deeper soul wrenching aching way. Empathy is not only the key to compassion but several recent studies show that it's critical to ones ability to make sound moral judgements. This book is an easy fast read that will stick to you for a long time.
  • Coach Kevin Kearns tells his story of being bullied relentlessly as a youngster and overcoming these horrible experiences to eventually become a highly successful and respected trainer, father and motivational coach. The book is entertaining and easy to read. If you have kids or work with kids or know anyone who does, I highly recommend this book.

  • I read this book and absolutely loved it. Very relatable. Made me reflect on my own life and I could actually see myself on both sides of the bullying aren at different times in my life. I am now a Deacon in the diocese of Boston and I would and will recommend this book to all my kids and adults facing this issue. One just needs to read this and reflect because we have all been touched by this issue.
  • Kevin, wrote a powerful story. It should be a must read for every kid in school. I have over 20 years experience of working with children. Bullying is a real issue facing kids from kindergarden through high school. We adults must inspire and provide opportunity for kids (like Kevin was in his youth) to stand up to bullies of all kind. This book is the start.

  • Much like the other reviewer, I struggled to stop reading once I started so I buzzed through the book pretty quickly. This is as touching a read as I've ever experienced and I found myself with a lump in my throat at times particularly with Kearns description of his plight surrounding his fathers passing. An avid reader this just instantly became one of my all time favorite books. I plan on recommending this to anyone willing to listen.
  • Great book, great inspiration for my son. Nicely and compassionately written.
  • I started to read this book and found myself not wanting to stop. The words pertain to many people what they go through. The story is genuine and heartwarming. It brought sadness but showed how much a family means to each other. I recommended this book to people i know and they had the same experience as me.. Hard to stop reading.
