This small, portable book presents a unique perspective on the human body for artists to study and implement in their drawing work. In this book, artist and teacher Michel Lauricella simplifies the human body into basic, synthetic shapes and forms, offering profound insight for artists of all kinds, sparking the imagination and improving one’s observational abilities. Rather than going the traditional route of memorizing a repertoire of poses, Lauricella instead stresses learning this small collection of forms, which can then be combined and shaped into the more complex and varied forms and postures we see in the living body.

(Publisher's Note This book features an “exposed” binding style. This is intentional, as it is designed to help the book lay flat as you draw.)

"I was surprised how small this book was, it fits right in my purse, which means I don't have to lug around an extra bag if I want to go out sketching. Despite that, it's still packed with a lot of content. The book is also bound in a way that lets it lay flat on the table when it's open, which is a nice convenience.

The reference is great, the way everything is well drawn and broken down into non-intimidating, simple shapes, while still retaining a strong level of detail. It feels like it would be useful for many different drawing skill levels."

  • The book is very slim. The book is only glued to the cover along a narrow strip of the last page, virtually guaranteeing the pages will rip free within the year. The book is very small in height and width. The printing of both the drawings and the text is in light gray which is difficult to read.

Recommend you buy the "Morpho Anatomy for Artists" book instead. For twice the price you get over three times the pages, a larger format, darker printing and a better binding.
  • This little book is honestly everything I needed it to be, if you've bought or considered getting Michael Hampton's book figure drawing design and invention hold off on it, get this one first, this is the more friendly version of that book and honestly I like this little morpho book better already, 10/10 would reccomend
  • A good little quick reference for the basic anatomical shapes. It doesn’t really go into proportion or “how to draw”, but if you know all of that stuff, or are studying it, this book has a lot of great drawings and little shorthand methods for constructing a figure.

As others have mentioned it, The binding is supposed to be that way. Fabriano sketchbooks are also bound this way so that the book will lay flat.
  • This book is incredibly handy and greatly detailed. It is small, but this book has everything that you need for structural anatomy. Tips given are very helpful, and I find myself using it often. Glad I made this purchase!

  • Updated to 5 stars based on the excellent content. Both books have the same (strange) binding, so I guess this is normal. Maybe easier to lay the book flat?
  • Bought all 3 books in this series. Some people don't seem to like the binding in these smaller books, but I actually really like the binding in this book and the skeleton/bone reference book. It's good because you can open the book and spread the book out so it lies completely flat on the table. The book pages are stitched together, which is good, because I like stitched pages more than glued pages. Also, I wasn't sure if I should get the 2 mini books because I thought maybe the drawings were exactly the same as what's in the bigger anatomy book, but they're not, they're different drawings that are focused more on simplified forms (orange book) and bone/reference points (blue book). So I'm glad I got them all. Looking forward to the fat and skin folds book.
  • It’s smaller than the anatomy for artists but it still beautiful drawn and detailed.
