"Can I give this 6 stars? Reading Nurture is the closest thing an expecting parent can do to hiring an experienced, knowledgeable doula. Written by doula, chef, and lactation consultant Erica Chidi Cohen, Nurture guides readers through so much more than the usual week-by-week book typical of prenatal guides. When I purchased this book, I expected to learn to nurture my pregnant body and care for my pre-born baby but Cohen’s scope is much larger and necessarily inclusive. Unlike most pregnancy books, Cohen devotes a full fourth of her book to what she calls “The Postpartum Shift”. The emphasis she places on postpartum recovery and care is as integral as her focus on self-care throughout the text. Cohen encourages mom’s to take care of themselves and speak up when they need the help of others around them. She continues her intermixing of specific advice on things like baby massage and breastfeeding with self-care tips, journal prompts, healthy recipes, and no-nonsense advice. Nurture was invaluable to me in both my parenting and doula training journeys. I find myself going back to the dog-eared, post-it note marked pages for support and valuable information. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to expecting parents as the one book to read that would prepare them for the full-gamut of the birth experience."

  • Nurture is the perfect word for this book. That is how I describe Erica's writing to people–because I talk about this book all of the time! No other pregnancy book has made me feel so understood and empowered. I love the way the author/doula takes care of the reader, and somehow touches on every part of the pregnancy process. She takes into consideration how your emotional past may be affecting your experience and shows you how to work with these feelings. Throughout the book the author empowers you to take control with five self-care practices Mindfulness with meditation prompts, Journaling with writing prompts, Movement with stretching/exercise suggestions for each month, Natural Remedies for all the things we pregnant ladies need to cope with, Nourishment info about what your body & baby needs plus healthy recipes along the way.

This reads like a modern book for pregnant women, and I like that about it. She touches on the reality most of us new moms face with totally changing our lives to become mothers. For instance, there is a little section written for freelancers, such as myself, and how to prepare for changes ahead with our unique business situations. I love that it's brought to attention that many of us do not get maternity leave and need to get creative with ways to work with the first few months of motherhood.

This article below is what turned me on to Erica's book and message. It's powerful to read even if you don't decide to get this book–though I can’t recommend it enough!

  • I really like the book, content and tips. However each chapter / section / month is pretty and I feel like I’m waiting forever between milestones to read the next section. I think there could be a little more Information packed into each month.
  • This is truly the most comprehensive, accessible, welcoming, well-written and intelligent book on childbirth and motherhood ever written! It explains not only the biology of pregnancy but the importance of proper nutrition, mental hygiene, wellbeing practices, emotional support and many other strategies for a well rounded, informed and joyful birth experience. Most importantly it is written in an inclusive, non-judgemental tone which can be hard to find in books like this. Erica is clearly a wonderful writer and compassionate midwife, and we are so lucky she is bringing her knowledge and intuition to a broader audience through this book. I have already bought Nurture for several friends and it will be my go-to whenever anyone finds out they are expecting or just starting to think about it. Can't possibly recommend more highly!
  • I absolutely adored this book while pregnant with my first child. I read a lot of books and this one was really the only one that empowered me to listen to my gut instincts and follow them. I even took it to the hospital during labor just in case I needed to refer back to it. It has also been helpful these first few months with baby. I’ll be buying this as a gift for all my friends when they get pregnant, I love it that much.
  • I have been following Erica and her work for years and Nurture was no less inspiring. The birth and parenting industrial complex can be intimidating and bent on breeding self-doubt and insecurity. Nurture gives you the confidence to trust yourself through really practical and well-rounded information and evidence-based advice. This is the perfect guide for any expecting parents — it’s thoughtful, progressive (which is seriously refreshing in this world of stodgy, outdated "experts"), comprehensive and full of information and advice presented in the warmest most approachable text. I also appreciate the diversity of birth and feeding options covered, all without judgement (and even the illustrations are inclusive!). Everything from the recipes to checklists are really perfection! This is an amazing baby shower gift and THE best companion for any expecting parents who want to feel confident and prepared in their pregnancy and parenting journey.
