Sparrows are as complicated as they are common. This is an essential guide to identifying 76 kinds, along with a fascinating history of human interactions with them.

What exactly is a sparrow? All birders, and many non-birders, have essentially the same mental image of a pelican, a duck, or a flamingo, and a guide dedicated to waxwings or kingfishers would need nothing more than a sketch and a single sentence to satisfactorily identify its subject. Sparrows are harder to pin down. This book covers the birds of the family Passerellidae, which includes towhees, juncos, and dozens of other not necessarily small and not necessarily brown birds.

Birds have a human history, too, beginning with their significance to native cultures and continuing through their discovery by science, their taxonomic fortunes and misfortunes, and their prospects for survival in a world with ever less space for wild creatures. This book includes not just facts and measurements, but stories of the birds' entanglement with human history. Â

"Have you ever wondered how a specific bird received that name? How many subspecies of this bird are recognized? When was it first discovered and described? You need wonder no longer.
I have been a birder for many years and I have never seen a publication as informative as this one. It is not simply another book on field identificaion of birds. It describes every species of the sparrow family (this includes juncos, towhees and buntings) which is found in North America, including Mexico, of course. For every species, subspecies and race of sparrow there is an illuminating discussion of the history, identification, distribution, individual characteristics, behavior and status. Each description is accompanied by beautiful photographs by Brian E. Small and others.
The information in this book will give you a much better understanding of and appreciation for these birds."

  • Pre-ordered this book, and have been delighted with it so far! My only quibbles are a bit of loose binding and a lack of maps. I know I can find range maps in other places, but I LOVE having maps with the text in this type of book. Even without maps, and having only made it through the first ~65 pages so far, this book is easily my number one sparrow reference, easily surpassing Rising.
  • This field guide can help any birder when it comes to the identification of North American Sparrows. It gives all the information anyone would need to know for each species. Whether a seasoned Ornithologist or just getting your feet wet, this is a book that should be on everyone's bookshelf.
